As an intro to the snow season, MUASC ran 3 trips to Snowplanet during Semester 1.  We used the ASA van to provide transport from Massey which means everyone can get to know each other and new members get a feel for what Snow Club trips are about.

For our events we had 13, 16 and 10 students attend respectively and the events were enjoyed by everyone who came. It was awesome to see that each group was made up of about 70% new members with a few old members coming along to help out and give skiing and snowboarding advice. It has also been great to see that some of our new members have come along to multiple nights as they are trying to “get good enough to come to the mountain”. This is exactly the opportunity we hoped to provide members with by running regular trips.  We have some funding left to run some more Snowplanet evenings, so why not come along and give it a go!

Albany Massey Engineering Student Society purchased a new pool table last month, following a generous grant from the Albany Student Association. 

 The arrival of this new pool table was welcomed by students both young and old, with undergrads, post-grads, and even staff quickly coming back out of retirement to demonstrate their skills. The new addition has been a welcome sight in the Student Recreation Room, which is the communal space on the Albany Village campus for students to relax and socialize between classes. 

Despite the abysmal Blues performance this year, those who attended the games had a great time!

The Massey Albany Football Club was successful in winning the Northern Football Federation, North Harbour
Men’s, Term 2, Futsal league on the 8th July 2015.  This league has provided the team with much needed
competitive game time as the Club prepares for the upcoming University Futsal Championship to be hosted
at Massey University. The Club would like to thank the ASA for their continued support which has enabled
the team to participate in this League. Below is the picture from on the night of the winning team.

The Northern Tertiary Challenge was held on Friday 22nd May.  Massey University Albany sent 4 sports teams
to represent the university in the following sports: touch, football and netball (2 teams). Our teams competed against the following North Island universities: Auckland University, AUT, Waikato, MIT, Unitec, and North Tec.Unfortunately both netball teams did not make it past the pool play, but the touch and football team both finished in respectable 5th place.

The fourth annual MUCBA 3v3 Basketball Tournament was held on Friday 17 April at the Recreation Centre. The tournament was co-hosed by MUCBA and Massey University Student Support Network Clubs. Teams from the following universities participated in the event: Massey University Albany, University of Auckland, AUT, Unitec, Waikato, Victoria and Northtec.  (MUCBA and MUSSN volunteers and the Massey team in action.)

This club has been conducting weekly yoga sessions for its members, since its inception in March, 2015. The club has about 9-12 students attending each week. The 45 minute yoga session is followed by a brief meditation of 5 minutes. After the meditation, everyone has a yummy homemade vegetarian snack together. It’s a nice small student yoga community and all students are welcome to join up.

Special Olympics North Harbour approached the Massey University team and asked them if they could provide an invitational team to join them in their season kick-off tournament held at QBE Stadium on 3rd May.  North Harbour football manager, Kevin Hodges, said “Having the invitational team at our tournament made a huge difference, particularly, to my A team who are the current Special Olympics National Champions and who badly need competitive teams to play against."  Shaun McMiken, Massey Albany football team manager reported that, "the guys really enjoyed their time at the Special Olympics event. They were a bit apprehensive at first, myself included, as we had not participated in such an event before. But once we got into it we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.”  The Massey University team were very good sports and managed to keep the score levels very close. They played matches against the top 2 North Harbour teams and then took part in an all-comers match.  Awards were presented to the Special Olympics athletes by the invitational team at the conclusion of the tournament.

On the 18th of February, AMESS held their annual 1st Year Engineering Orientation to welcome the new Engineering students to Massey University and prepare them for their future within Engineering. This event consisted of a morning of fun team building activities to get the new students acquainted with each other as well as learn the layout of the Albany Village Campus and meet some of their potential new lecturers.

Following a morning of team building activities; a large BBQ was held with the support of the School of Engineering and all current engineering students
were invited so that they could enjoy themselves before university starts but also for them to meet the new students and help form new connections.

We finished the day off with a large game of tug of war and it was a very successful event overall! 

The Massey Badminton Club, together with teams from Auckland University, AUT and Waikato University, took part in the annual Super League tertiary competition organised by the Auckland Badminton Association. Team manager, Morris Zhao, reported that the Massey team all performed well and played their best but were unable to win the tournament.  All competitors had a great day and getting to take part was a good experience.

The team members were: Morris Zhao (manager), Vincy Wu, Can Wang,  ZhongRen (Tony) Fang, Yifan Zhang and Boxin Yan.

Members of the Massey Association for Communication Student (MACS) welcomed Simone Bell, 

Chief Executive of the Public Relations Institute of New Zealand (PRINZ) to the Massey Albany
campus in March. 

Simone discussed best practice communication and the benefits of a PRINZ student membership. 
Students were treated to inside knowledge of the public relations industry and delicious sushi! 
MACS members look forward to building a great relationship with PRINZ.
