AMESS - Pool Contest

AMESS - Engineering Society (2019/R3)

For three consecutive Wednesdays (7th, 14th and 21st August), AMESS hosted a pool tournament for engineering and food technology students and staff to enter. The tournament was to be played using the pool table and cues that this grant was entered for. The table and cues as a bundle cost $675.

The entry fee for this competition was $1 with cash prizes to be won for the winner and runner up. 15 students and 1 staff member entered this competition.

Video cameras were setup and a live feed of this competition was posted onto the AMESS Facebook page. This video feed had live commentary from two AMESS members (Zhan Widdison and Eamon McArdle). All games were refereed by one AMESS member too, (Shreyas Borgaonkar).

The competition was played with single elimination games until the semi-finals and finals which had to be played as a best of 3 to determine the winner. A ladder setup was set up with players randomly allocated games as seen in figure to the right.

Times and dates were allocated for three consecutive Wednesdays where the player had to come and play his/her game.

Pre-match and post-match interviews were done of players which were part of the live feed of the tournament. The full videos were uploaded to the AMESS Facebook page after each day so that anyone who would like to watch can easily do so.

Once the semi-finalists were decided, new posters for the respective semi-final clashes were made and posted to Facebook so that more people would come and support their friends (posters below).

The finals were played on 21st August and the winner and runner up were announced with a short prize giving session which can be seen at the end of week 3's video which was posted on the AMESS Facebook page. Both the winner and runner up were awarded their prizes (both winner (Logan Nutsford) and runner up (Gabriel Phang) standing with referee (Shreyas Borgaonkar)).

On the whole, this was a brilliant event which was a huge success. All engineering and food technology students were interested and all competition days saw a great audience as proof. This year this competition was short with a small number of people entering. However, this is thought to be because of this event being new and being run for the first time.

Hopefully next year more people enter this competition and AMESS can build on this event.
