Massey University Albany Food Technology Society (MUAFTS) held our first food tour at the Chelsea sugar factory on the 24th of April 2019. The event was a great success and 12 members, made up of 1st, 2nd and 3rd year Food Technology students, attended.

Upon arrival to the factory all members met at the Chelsea Bay cafe at 1pm for a quick bite and everyone indulged in a sugary product.

At 2pm, we made our way to the tour where we all looked pretty in pink with our bright pink hi-vis vest and helmets.

During the tour we travelled around the site on the Chelsea Bay Train.

Key highlights of the tour included learning how raw sugar is processed to become the final product in our supermarkets, tasting the syrups developed by Chelsea sugar, and observing the sugar mountain which can hold 80,000 tonnes at a time. It was a great experience for all as we were able to apply our knowledge into the real world.
